Army to the rescue
The recent spate of snow and ice may have slowed some people down, but it was "business as usual" in Waiouru. The icy conditions on the Desert Road meant the Camp Emergency Services were out on the job. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but the ice was enough for at least one bus driver to have second thoughts. He sought Army assistance to negotiate the road. This arrived in the
form of a giant M816 wrecker truck and the Fire Station's Initial Response Unit. Passing motorists trapped by the road closure helped out by giving bus passengers a lift into Waiouru township where they waited to reboard the bus. Chained to the big wrecker the bus cautiously moved down the icy slopes and was followed in to find its passengers.
