Racing with GILLY

The three day Wellington Race meeting was not kind for the local connectio'ns of Le Ana, nor was the weather at its best for the Trentham officials. Well known local identities, Ken George, Bully Hayes and Ray Spry with out of towners G. Eaton, T. Donovan, and C. Mudgway make up the syndicate that races winter galloper Le Ana. It raced twice at

Wellington, the first day in a highweight gaining a creditable third placing and only payjng $2.30, most of the wagers coming from 'Carrot Country' I fancy! On the last day she stepped up to tackle the open class horses in the Winter Oats Handicap. Trailing to the home turn, she slowly drifted out, but the run would have improved her. The connections, hoping to run her in the Taumaranui Cup, will be lucky to get enough weight on her back to be able to get a start. As Le Ana is going out to stud at the end of the winter, I'm jure she will be seen in the winner's circle before then. The TAB announced last week that from 1 August, they will cease taking bets for a midweek meeting, the day before. Recent changes in betting habits means that fewer people have been ; placing bets before the day

of race meetings, as they prefer to wait for track conditions and final scratchings. Telephone betting accounts will also not open until 10.00am on midweek race day. The Levin Racing Club on Wednesday 18 July has attracted good fields for its Ryder Stakes Meeting. Some of those to work well towards the end of last week were Sebastiano, Lucky Pal who gained a fourth at Wellington, Titian who loves the mud up to his knees, and my fancy for the meeting, if its not too h^avy, is Go Mamma trained by Noel Eales. Watch out for Giveaway in Race Seven and in Race Six a sentimental pick for the ladies, Carolina Moon. Well, that's my lot for this week, next week Bully will be back, hopefully not too broke after Le Ana's performance on Saturday.
