TASCI club centre for winter activities
TASCi has come a.ong way in the past few years. From a small group of keen beginners the local Waimarino Ski Club has developed many and varied skills. The policy of 'people first' ensures that the T ASC1 clubrooms are not the most modern in town but our young skiers are some of the best in the country. At present 30 local families and individuals make up the local membership with 16 out-of-town members swelling the ranks over winter. The principal aim is to encourage outdoor activities and in particular, skiing becomes the main winter focus. The Club has developed its own Ski Race Programme. Under the firm guidance of Dave Scott and George Drayton youngsters can be seen skiing any North Island Skifield wearing their distinctive red, black and blue jackets or yellow and green hats. TASCI Turbos, Terrors and Turners display Some enviable skills ... towards the end of last season some of these youngsters had the opportunity to train with the Regional Ski Team. The club is confident that before long such local names as Mosaed, Wilde, Drayton, Scott and Bramley will be the Regional Ski Team. The New Zealand Ski Association in conjunction with AHI Turoa has relied more and more on TASCI administration to take control of both Regional
and National Ski Races. Under the guidance of Don Allomes a team of personnel can npw host such race events as the Homestyle Cup, Grinwade Cup and the North Island Inter-Second-ary Schools Skiing Competition. This is used as a ve~»ue for meetings and social gettogethers by other interested groups who require the user of such facilities, and of course, a place to stay in the winter. Club policy is to encourage skiers both young and old. Waimarino people are especially welcome as we hope always to maintain a strong local membership. The Club would be interested to hear from potential members whether they are keen skiers, mountaineers, climbers or trampers ... the opportunity to meeU together both on and off the mountain can be a great experience. This latter race, developed by Alan Graham of Ruapehu College is now the largest ski race in New Zealand including mQre than 160 young racers. TASCI now provides a much improved and renovated home in the TASCI lodge which is situated on the corner of Miro and Shannon Streets in Ohakune. At its AGM the following officers were elected: President Bruee Wilde, Treasurer Alan Graham, Sec-
retary Sue Allomes, Committee Dave Scott (member in charge of ski race iraining programme), Don Allomes ski race organisations, George Drayton, Dave Palmer, Maurice Bishop, Nita Wilde and Richard Darlow.
After their AGM, Mount Cook Promotions mounted a static visual display and screened a skiing film, Before their meeting members of the Club were seen gardening and landscaping the clubroom grounds.
