SMP decision
"Dairy farmers welcome the announcement by the Government on transitional arrangements for assistance to* the Dairy Industry, particularly the acceptance of underpinning the industry's returns," the Chairman of the Dairy Section of Federated Farmers Owen Jennings said recently. "However the lack of detail in the announcement is alarming and dairy farmers require a commitment by Government to a firm level of underpinning. While other agricultural sectors have an assured level of support indicated, the dairy industry lacks this confidence and necessary support at a time when its returns have been adversely affected by international political decisions and internal inflation." "Urgent negotiations with Government will be required following the election to ensure the detail of this announcement means in fact realistic support for the dairy industry," concluded Mr Jennings.
Johnny Pikari (pictured) of Ohakune has spent over five years working in the local market gardens. He has worked for a number of market gardeners including Ron Frew, Peter Hammond, Frank. Taylor, Ray Wilson and others. In that time he must have pulled and washed thousarids of carrots but never one like this before! But he's had enough ... "if the carrots are going to get that big I want another job. " "I'm not afraid of work ... T just don't want to work in market gardens anymore." Can anyone offer this willing worker another job?
