Elegant homestead now VIP retreat
TheWaiouru Homestead was built around the turn of the century for A.C. and W.K. Morton who leased part of Waiouru Station which in those days covered the Waiouru Army Camp. A number of owners were to hold rights to the land and buildings but the homestead was mainly occupied by appointed managers. The final civilians to occupy the homestead before the Army took over in the late 1930's were the Phillips family and when they left in 1938 their housekeeper, Mrs Gray, remained in the homestead with her mother and daughter (who is now Mrs Mulvay from Mulvay's Corner) until 1939. The Homestead was then used as sleeping quarters by the army and in later years was used as the Pottery Clubrooms. In the 1930's it was decided by the army to restore the homestead and it is now used as accommodation for visiting VIP's, the first guest having been the Governor General.
