Late season talk exaggerated
The reports that the official opening of the Turoa ski season is five weeks late are false, said Tony Wright, general manager of Turoa Ski'fields. "We've never officially opened the season as a full week operation before the end of the first weekend in July." "Because we had an unusual and exceptionally heavy snowfall during the 1983 Queens Birthday weekend — it even fell in Ohakune — we did open for that weekend but closed again until more reliable snow arrived in July ... so June last year was not a typical experience." Since 1930 Mt Ruapehu has had 25 good seasons (snow-wise), 13 have been fair and 15 have been poor. More specifically in the last 10 years, four have been good, three have been fair and three have been poor. Dry skiing acadamies have already begun under the tuition of John Ball, Turoa's Ski School instructor ... 36 people turned up last week to loosen up and limber up in preparation for the snow which can't be far away. .
