Safe was safe

A heavy steel safe was found partially submerged in the Mangateitei Stream which runs behind the public toilet block in Ohakune's Jubilee Park last week. The safe, which had the words: 'Detonators — Dangerous' painted on the door was discovered by two schoolboys who reported

their find to the police. An Army bomb disposal squad was called in and after they and the police had examined the safe it was found to be empty and posed no threat. Police Sgt. Neil Coker said that while its origin was still a mystery, the safe (with both handles missing) would now just be treated as 'abandoned property'.
