ELECTION LINE-UP

The 1984 General Election takes place this coming Saturday the I4th July ... a date better known in France as 'Quatorze Juillet' or 'Bastille Day' when an oppressive fortress and prison in Paris was destroyed in the year 1789. At this year's General Election there are 463 candidates competing for the 95 seats. Of these 463 candidates 60 are women. Polling booths throughout the country will be open from 9.00am to 7.00pm on Saturday. For people who will not be in their electorates on Saturday special votes may be lodged during this week at Borough Council offices from 9.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday.

Mr James Bolger (49) of Te Kuiti has represented the King Country as an MP for 12 years in various capacities. He was Minister of Labour in the last government. He is married with nine children.

Mr Derek Mason (50) a sheep and beef farmer from Oparue who has unsuccessfully contested the King Country seat on three previous occasions. He is married with three children.

Mr Graham Short (45) is a farmer from Pureora Forest who is contesting a parliamentary seat for the first time. He is a Justice of the Peace. He is married with four children.

Mr Jim Simons (33) is branch secretary of the Meatworkers Union at the King Country works near Taumarunui. He is contesting a parliamentary seat for the first time. He is married with four children and lives in Owhango.

Mr Peter Winter (64) is a farmer from Motonui in Taranaki. He has contested the Taranaki electorate on several previous occasions. He has been agricultural spokesman for the Values Party for a number of years.
