CLEMATIS

The Raetihi Borough Council and the Waimarino County Council are, through their two representatives Cr Tom Punch and Cr Con Heinold, to contact the Noxious Plants Authority to have Clematis Vitalva ('Old Man's BeardOdeclared as a noxious weed. They are hoping for a Class A Noxious Weed classification. The weed which had been introduced from Europe in the 1950's is now rampant in the district and was "devastating to native reserves" said Cr Andrew Cornwall. "It was very difficult to control but by classifying it as a noxious weed it will be drawn to the attention of the public and we will be able to establish the extent of the problem," he said. If Clematis Vitalva is classified as a noxious weed it will be an offence to plant or spread 'Old Man's Beard'.
