Death of respected Maori elder

Ohakune witnessed one of the largest funerals seen in the Waimarino for many years, last Tuesday 12 June, when Maori elder, 70-year old John Mareikura was buried with full honours following a ceremony held at the Ohakune marae which was attended by several hundred mourners. Mr Mareikura died peacefully in his sleep on . Friday 8 June at Waimarino

Hospital, Raetihi, where he had been hospitalised for some time. Flags flew at half-mast over the weekend on both the Raetihi and Ohakune maraes. Father Neal Wilson, parish priest of Ohakune, conducted the ceremony in front of approximately 600 people. The respect shown for Mr Mareikura was obvious from the 200-300 mourners from all over the

North Island who visited the marae each day between his death on Friday and his funeral on Tuesday. His presence on the Marae will be sadly missed. Mr Mareikura is survived by his wife Mae and their nine children: Daniel, Johnny, Molly, Walter, Francis, Ken, Mercia, Theresa and Roseanne.
