Young Nationals For the third consecutive year the annual conference of the Young Nationals was held at the Chateau Tongariro on Queen's Birthday weekend. Approximately 150 delegates and observers from throughout the country attended. Speakers included: David Bisman, President Technical Institutes Services Association, Wellington; Michael , Cox, Junior Government Whip, Wellington; Godfrey Thomas, spokesman Young Farmers, Masterton. Speeches were also well received from Mr Birch, Mr Quigley, Mr Shearer, Mr Malcolm, Mr Upton and Mr Thompson. The Djvisional Chairman from Otago Michael Laws commented that this year it was particularly evident that delegates had not concerned themselves with radical issues. But rather that they had concentrated on major^ issues, namely 'education and youth unemployment.' The Young Nationals President, Alistair Bell from Christchurch, expressed his satisfaction and said "this has been one of the best conferences so far, as you can see from the remits passed. And next year, it promises to be even bigger and better." Country Music Club The National Park Country Music Club staged a highly successful, footstomping evening at Mountain View recently. Supporters from Turangi, Owhango, Matiere, Taumarunui, Hamilton and Auckland attended. Club singers included Murray Griffin, Bruce Parr, Alison Jacobs, Aroha Rudkin, Trish Greer, Linda Pakau-Bowringand Warren Furner. Band: Rhythm Joe Jacobs, Bruce Parr, Bass guitarist Nick Pakau, Steel guitarist Warren Furner, Drummer Matiu Williams. Guest singers: Joanne Churton represented Ohakune Country Music Club. Jamie Quirk deer farmer Murupara and former pupil of National Park School. Jeff Prince employed by John Funnell Charter Air Services Taupo.
The club has maintained a high level of fund-raising and entertaining activities throughout the past 12 months. A recent purchase was $2,000 worth of new P.A. system, which has been the club's objective for the past two years. Members anticipate a successful attendance at the Annual General Meeting to be held on Monday 25 June . at 7.00pm in the Waikune Social Room. New Zealand Secondary School Cross Country Sixteen-year old Mark Earle a former pupil from National Park School, will represent Collegiate College Wanganui for the third consecutive year. The competition will be held in Rangiora, Christchurch on Saturday 23 June. Mark will be a senior . grader this year and the distance for the course is 6000 metres. At the same competition in Oamaru 1982, he completed the course of about 4000 metres finishing 78 in a field of 350 runners. Then at Paeroa last year despite a severe case of bronchitis, he gained 68 in a field of about 350 competitors. In December 1982 at the New Zealand Secondary School's Athletics Competition in Wellington, he was placed 22 in a field of 350. Parents, Marie and Charles Earle will again leave their Raurimu farm to support their son Mark in Rangiora. Charles, also a former pupil from Collegiate is of the opinion that Mark has the potential to reach the top. "But he is not a serious competitor, he runs for pleasure and for enjoyment," said his father.
