RAETIHI RUNNER HEADS OVERSEAS
Raetihi's ultra distance runner Siggy Bauer heads off this week for America and the New York 6-day race. He will spend a fortnight preparing for the event and getting himself acclimatised to the temperatures ... he is expecting to have to ruri in an estimated 40° C to 44° C if last year's experience is to he repeated. He won the race on that occasion and is hoping for a similar success this year. Last year he covered 511 miles in six days. The race is run on the Reynolds Track on the outskirts of New York ... the same track that Jesse Owens used to prepare for the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany. Last week Siggy received a donation of $500 from the Raetihi Skating Rink Committee to help him with his expenses.
