Kindergartens amalgamate
The Waiouru, Manawatu and Rangitikei Kindergarten Associations have amalgamated to form the Ruahine Kindergarten Association. Waiouru Kindergarten
Association was previously run by volunteers but the new Palmerston North based association will employ a full-time administrator and a part-time accounts officer.
Waiouru has two kindergartens. The Weir Terrace Kindergarten which was opened in 1954 has three teachers and a roll of 77, which is split into a morning and afternoon class. The Kenningston Place Kindergarten opened in 1975 has a roll of 59 (two classes) and two staff. Isolation and a moving population has caused difficulties for the kindergartens in the past but the merger will give teachers and the local group a professional body to govern them. A released senior teacher will also be available to the Waiouru Kindergartens. The new arrangement will also give access to equipment and a professional psychologist.
