Ngamatea pupils report on trip to Auckland
Pupils oi Ngamatea School, accompanied by principal Peter Miller and four parents, travelled by mini bus to Auckland last term and stayed at the Takapuna Tourist Court. During their stay the children had an extremely busy schedule which introduced them to many aspects of a big city. The following comments are reflections made by the children following their trip. Sunday 4.30 p.m. We went for a walk along the beach. Kelly, Christopher and I collected shells. Brett, Christopher, Helen, Brendon and Selena got wet. I collected brown shells. Kelly collected fish finned like shells. » Belinda and Anita went right to the end of the beach. Lindsay Monday Morning Ferry Ride On the Ferry I saw the wake going out. I went up to the top of the Ferry. It was fun on the Ferry. I saw the navy ship the Waikato going out. Brett Downtown Auckland When we got off the ferry we were in the downtown area of Auckland. Eyeryone rushed into the shops to go up and down the escalators. Some of the children and mothers wandered off. Mr Miller rushed off to find them. Raylene Museum At the Museum we went to see the Maori section. We
also saw an Egyptian mummy and some real gold cups. In the bird hall we saw some big moas. Anita Auckland City Council Mr Johnson showed us the Auckland City Council motorbikes and cars. He also demonstrated the sirens. Mr Salter took us into the Town Hall and we were allowed to sit in the Council Chamber seats. Raylene sat in the Mayor's chair. We were taken to the top of the administration building. At the top I could see right across the Waitemata Harbour. At the bottom of the building we met the Mayor of Auckland, Mrs Tizard. Christopher Naval Base We visited the Naval Base at 3.00pm. We looked at a fishing trawler that was in the dry dock. We also saw a ship called 'Wellington' that was being refitted with new parts. Melissa Tuesday Motat The Museum of Transport and Technology shows the sort of transport people used in the old days. They also had displays of a school and shops. We then had a doubie-decker bus ride and then a tram ride to the zoo. Belinda Zoo When I went to the zoo I saw lions and polar bears,
giralles and monkeys. We saw a man telling the elephant to lay down in the water. If he didn't lay down he didn't take it for a walk. Anon. MacDonalds 6.00 p.m. We had chips, hamburgers, fizzy drink and an ice cream. We were shown around the back and we made our own ice creams. Kelly Chapman 5 yrs Ice Skating 7.30 p.m. We fell over a lot and we had cold bottoms. Helen, Anita and Brett were the best ice skaters. Selena Johnson 6 yrs Some people helped us ice skate around the rink. Mr Miller fell down twice. Helen Morris 6 yrs Wednesday After a very tiring four days with late nights for both children and adults the long trek home via Matamata and Taupo our journey ended with a typical chilly reception from the weather. "To sleep perchance to dream." The school was very fortunate to have the School Commlttee, the parents and the community's support to raise all the necessary finance prior to the trip. On behalf of all the children we thank all those people who responded to our fundraising efforts. Peter Miller Principal, Ngamatea School
