Exhibition of crafts raises funds for DEBRA
More than 200 adults and many children — who didn't have to pay and therefore no record was kept of them — visited the Crafts Exhibition at the Ohakune Lions Den over the Queen's Birthday weekend. Organised by Val Parkes to raise money for the xare skin disease known as Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (DEBRA) the exhibition featured the work of four local artist/ craftsmen. Errol Vincent of Solart Photo in Ohakune exhibited seventeen 1 6x20 coloured prints of photographs taken in the Tongariro National Park which contrasted the
solidity of rock formations with the fluidity of water and mountain streams. Allan Brown and James Clifford of Makers . in Raetihi exhibited some handsomely handcrafted pieces of furniture including a double bed, a cot, chest of drawers, coffee table, bedroom screen and china cabinet. Honey Winter of the Honeypot Studio in Raetihi exhibited and discussed the display of ceramics which included both decorative ornaments and practical utensils. Juliet Eszes of Ohakune exhibited some exquisitely
fine examples of needlework based on the traditional patterns of Hungary. These included a wide range of applications including a tablecloth (pictured) which took six years to make and a bedspread which took three years to complete. All exhibitors said the response to the display of their work was very pleasing and there were lots of enquiries and feedback from members of the public. Mrs Val Parkes was also pleased with the response — over $300 was raised for DEBRA from door saies and raffles.
