Career crossroads

Gary MacKenzie, Ohakune Branch Manager of the Wanganui Savings Bank, is moving across the street. That is, his new business interest will be on the opposite side of the road from his previous one. Mr MacKenzie will resign as manager of the WSB at the end of this week to take up a business partnership in a local retail outlet — the Rendezvous Dairy in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune — with Mrs Annette Schrier. "I've always wanted my own business," Mr MacKenzie said "and I'd like a change. IVebeeninbanking for ten years." Mr MacKenzie moved to Ohakune three years ago from Wanganui where he was staff training manager. He said that the Rendezvous Dairy idea has been ongoing for nearly twelve months. Mr MacKenzie added that "its a big step to make such a change. " He admitted that he's a bit worried about switching from banking to running a dairy, but hopes to use the skills he's learnt at the bank and apply them to the dairy.

He added that the intention is to broaden his managerial experience and to work and meet with people which is something he enjoys immensely.

Gary MacKenzie said many people had wished him good luck and had also said that he will be missed. However, he said that he won't be leaving Ohakune at all. "I enjoy Ohakune and think it's a great place," he said. When asked how his family felt about the move, Mr MacKenzie replied "they're right behind me. If they weren't, I wouldn't be doing it," he added. The only drawback for his wife Delwyn, daughters Tracey, 2 and Kylie, 3 months, is that he will be working longer hours at the dairy. However, 27-year old Gary MacKenzie feels he is young enough to work hard and make a success of the business at the dairy. He added that he will also be able to take time off in the afternoon to allow Delwyn to get out of the house which is something he couldn't do at the bank. WSB has as yet, made no decision as to who will succeed Mr MacKenzie. \
