CORE CURRICULUM

The following submission on the Review of the Core Curriculum for schools has been received for publication from Ruapehu College, Ohakune. The staff is dismayed that insufficient time has been given for the consideration of the document and all its implications. We are in basic agreement with the new core curriculum in Forms 3 and 4 as our present philosophy and school programme is very similar. However, there are some areas of concern: (a) We believe that aspects

of Economic Studies relating to life skills should be a compulsory component of the core curriculum. (b) We would like a clearer indication regarding activities and studies to be undertaken in the requirement for Taha Maori in the core curriculum. (c) We are concerned at how some aspects will be staffed e.g. music, and funded e.g. computer awareness. (d) The need for increased in-service jtraining to assist teachers with the wider range of subjects they may be requested to teach will be vital. Visit to Wanganui Regional Community College On Friday 25 May a busload of pupils and three teachers from Ruapehu College travelled to Wanganui to visit the Wanganui Regional Community College. Leaving the college at 9. 1 5 and arriving in Wanganui at 11.00 the pupils were met and given a guided tour of the Community College campus. One group of girls went to the Hairdressing Department to watch the latest techniques

in hair care. At 12.00 the group had lunch in the college cafeteria. In the afternoon the party was divided into several groups depending on the pupils main interest. Most boys and some girls went to Engineering and Gas Welding Workshops where they were allowed to have practical experience in these areas. Others went to Pottery classes and were also allowed to have practical experience with clay while others visited the Commerce Department. Everybody was impressed with the visit, and pleased to see three ex- Ruapehu College pupils attending the Community College. Rugby Lyndon Kurukaanga and Gabriel Te Moana, two members of the Ruapehu College 's 1st XV rugby team were chosen for the sub union side of the Northern Wanganui Colts (under 23's). This team has played one game so far against Taupo with Lyndon and Gabriel playing excellent games with Lyndon scoring four tries and being named Player of the Day.
