Turoa Skifield staff stage 'dummy run'

The Turoa skifields held its yearly public relations and induction course for new employees on Saturday 26 May. It was staged in two parts: one in the morning for ski patrol and lift operators and one in the afternoon for everyone else such as ticket office staff, car park attendants and snow hos•tesses. For several employees it was the first time on the mountain. Eighty-five employees were chosen out of some 400 applicants. Andy Chapman, public relations manager for Turoa said "Turoa employees come from all walks of life. We look for someone with the fortitude we need and these people range from students to unemployed. Personality is the key," Mr Chapman said. Andy Chapman added that because of the unpredictability of the season, some of the staff may have to resign from other jobs to get to Turoa early. He cited the ski patrol, ski school.and lift operators as the largest employed areas.

After lunch, a lecture by Mr Grant Amos of Air New Zealand was held for the second group. The first group had their lecture in the morning and after lunch, proceeded up the mountain for outdoor training. Mr Amos briefed employees about duties and responsibilities and talked about the importance of cooperation between Turoa employees and customers. He gave several examples as to why the custorner comes first. It was Mr Amos's third appearance at the Turoa induction course. Andy Chapman said that the season at Turoa never stops ... or at least the, preparation for it. He said there is a clean-up season, a period . where last year's season is studied and a planning period for the upcoming season. There is never really a cut-off point, he said. A contest for the most cheerful and efficient Turoa employee will be held. The public will vote and the winners will receive a trip to

Sydney.
