COURT

In the Ohakune District Court on 24 May 1984, Judge E. W. Unwin convicted David William Hagley (45) unemployed of Ohakune on a charge of theft. The court heard that Hagley . had received unemployment benefit from the Department of Social Welfare commencing 1 May 1981 through to 18 NovemI ber 1983 whilst receiving large sums of interest money from his various investments. He also falsely claimed that his wife was not employed when in fact she had been in part-time employment. Over a period of thirtyone months, Hagley received $13,534.61 from the Department of Social Welfare and when interviewed by police, admitted that he had falsely represented his financial situation. After Hagley had pleaded guilty, Judge Unwin convicted and remanded him until 21 June for a probation officer's report and he was further released on bail on a bond of $1,000.
