Siggy Bauer heads for New York
and the 6-Day Race
Siggy Bauer, Raetihi's ultra-distance runner, has accepted an invitation to run in the New York 6-day Race which is due to be held between 2-8 July. Siggy, who won this event last year against twentythree competitors after covering 511 miles, will be defending his title this year against 31 distarice runners from all over the world. He leaves Raetihi's winter about the middle of next month to allow two weeks to acclimatise himself to run in New York's summer temperatures which range from 35° to 38° celcius. Hoping to accompany Siggy on his trip will be Terry Drayton of Ohakune who; as his manager, will be responsible for all media coverage.
Terry last week said that Siggy has reached a critical stage of his running career. Since being banned by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association two months ago for either running in last year's Sydney to Melbourne race or the 1,000 Colac race (which he won) — he's not quite sure which race offended the NZAAA — it was now important for him to seek product endorsement and sponsorships to continue with his ultra-distance running career both in New Zealand and overseas. The New York 6-day Race is a premier event in the international running calendar and should attract top competitors to the Reynold's Island racetrack where it is to be held.
