Drainlayers dig deep
Stage One of the Raetihi sewerage reticulation scheme has been delayed by the discovery in Seddon Street of large rocks under the road, found by the contractors — Taumarunui Excavators — when they routinely started digging. The rocks, presumably dumped there through the manhole covers, have now been cleared, but subsidence problems in what was originally swamp land, have contributed to further delays. The soil that has been removed is now unsuitable as fill so metal and grit fill has had to be brought in especially for the base. New piping will be laid on top of the base fill followed by better quality fill. The additional work and fill has obviously resulted in more money having to be spent. This, coupled with the time delay, has meant that
what was considered to be a relatively simple job, has escalated beyond the original estimates. Commencement of Stage Two has thus been put back until Stage One has been completed. Tenders are being called for Stage Two.
