HOSPITAL BOARD RESPONDS

The following statement was released by the Wanganui Hospital board following the Waimarino Bulletin report entitled 'Future of Waimarino Hospital' which appeared in our 10 April edition". "The Obstetric Services Committee has, over the last three days, visited nine areas throughout the Board's region. In each area we have met with the local committees which were convened by the local Board member. This was our second visit to the areas. We have found these visits very valuable as it has allowed us to discuss many matters with a wide range of people froiri each community. Although the process may have seemed slow and cumbersome at times, the personal contacts and the ability to exchange information and test ideas directly with local people has been invaluable. We believe that these Committees, though not necessarily with the same members, should be con-

sulted when each of the Board's Service Plans are produced. Much of the data collected by the Obstetric Services Committee will be of use for further service development groups in the Board's area. The discussions of each committee are confidential at the present time but it is hoped to produce a draft obstetric plan in about a month's time. This will be presented to the Board via the Services Committee and this will be a public document. The nine areas will be visited again to discuss the draft plan. A final service plan for obstetrics for the Board's area will then be produced for the Board to consider. At the present time, the Committee has produced a detailed assessment of each area. It is investigating new and better uses for underutilised resources. It is looking at the optimum siting of area maternity units with the purpose of improving and extending, not only maternity services, but the overall medical service of each area."
