Building permits exceed $2 million

The following are the statistics for Building Permits issued for the year ended 31 March 1984. Permits issued: Dwellings (57), Alterations (32), Ski Clubs (1), Carports (6), Shops (1), Garages (9), Motels (1). The total value of building permits issued in Ohakune was $2,250,5 1 3.00. ★ * ★ Other Ohakune Borough Council matters considered at last month's meeting included: Borough Water Supply A special meeting called by Council and held on 17 April received representation from. the Department of Health and Ministry of Works & Development

regarding the Ohakune Borough Council's water supply. Mr Cairns, the senior supervising Inspector of Health, Wanganui, presented to Council the Department 's concern about the high number of bacteriological positive counts they have had returned over the years from the samples of water taken. He also stressed that the contamination appeared to be more prevalent and that surface water was more prone to contamination than underground bore water. The only possible way of reducing contamination was by disinfecting with chlorine. This could be done in either of two ways: 1 . By intermittent injection of chlorine into the water line, or 2. By a reservoir; the latter of course being more expensive. Mr Rowan, an engineer from the Ministry of Works and Development, Wanganui, concurred with the statements made by Mr Cairns and elaborated on the technical methods used by other authorities. In his estimation, the injection method would be the cheapest and most effective for the Borough. His estimate of cost would be between $5,000 and $15,000 to install such an applicator.

Following a question from one of the Councillors regarding the ability of the, Department of Health to force the Council into chlorinating the water, Mr Cairns replied to the effect that he had the power to refer the matter to the Head Office of the Department of Health with a recommendation that disinfection of the water be carried out. It was recommended that the matter be referred back to the Works Committee for further discussion. Art Prize It was recommended that a sum of $500.00 be donated to the Turoa Art Exhibition and that once again Council staff be made avaiiable to transportdisplay equipment. Rates The Chairman of the Finance Committee stated he was quite pleased with the way rates had decreased over the past month, but there was still some concern about outstanding rates. The Town Clerk advised that the Borough Foreman had disconnected the water from the properties within the town area, but was to look at Turoa Village later. It was recommended that a $50.00 reconnection fee be imposed on all services which required the water to be cut off due to nonpayment of rates.
