COLLEGE NEWS
Gary Brain, the senior percussionist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra visited Ruapehu College on 17 April. This was the second of such visits to the school by Mr Brain. During his visit Mr Brain introduced students to many percussion instruments and explained how they were made and what they were originally used for. He also played a short instrumental piece using all of the percussion instruments he had brought with him. Mr Brain has been touring schools all over New Zealand for approximately 5 years now. ★ ★ * The Massey liaison officer, Mr McLeod, visited Ruapehu College in April. The purpose of Mr McLeod's
visit was to talk to sixth and seventh Form students interested in perusing University study programmes. ★ ★ ★ Mr G. Brebner took his Third Form Social Studies class to visit the Raetihi Hydro Electric Power Station on Thursday 3 May. The class who are studying Relief and Climate visited the station to help them with particular topic questions. ★ ★ ★ On Tuesday 1 May Mrs M. George took her Fifth and Sixth Form Art classes to Palmerston North and Hato Paora College at Cheltenham. The visit was initiated to further the Maori Art Study which is a compulsory section of the School Certificate prescription. The group visited the Manawatu Art Gallery with particular interest in viewing the Frank Davis
Exhibition. Also a conducted tour of Hato Paora College was held with time for students to make some sketches of their own and take photos. ★ ★ ★ Also on 1 May Miss L. Wilson took her Fourth Form class, 4W, to Turangi to visit the Department of Internal Affairs Wild Life division with particular interest in the Tongariro trout hatchery. Accompanied by Mr R. Rowles the class spent some time at the hatchery and then travelled to Tokaanu for a swim in the hot pools. ★ ★ ★ Ruapehu College completed an enjoyable and busy term on Friday 4 May. The college will reopen for the beginning of Term 2 on the 21 May. Examinations for senior classes begin on 14 June. Term 2 will also see a busy sports prograrhme.
