'Language Nest'

Enjoying the morning sunshine at the Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune are some of the children, their mothers, supervisors and one of their teachers of the Te Kohanga Reo — or Language Nest. This child-care centre, which was started at the Marae in February 1983, has a roll of about 1 5 children aged from 6 months to 5 years and is open every weekday for five hours a day. Pictured are some of the children who regularly attend the sessions, with their kaiako, or language instructor for the day, Mrs Joan Akapita. This Language Nest has two natural Maori speakers

as supervisors, who guide the children's development in the language. Also present are some of the mothers, Korty Wilson, Jonnita Akapita, Patsy Johnson and Ped Hawira, who are learning with their children so that the use of Maori Language can be continued at home. Miss Lisa Mareikura and Miss Viti Barker are both participants in a special employment programme ... the Voluntary Organisation Training Programme. They are employed for one year to receive specific training in a work-skill. In this instance the skills are those of early childhood care and education.
