New railway bridge and better mountain road

An Auckland firm has won the contract for the replacement of Railway Bridge 169 over Ohakune's Mountain Road as part of the upgrading and realignment of the Main Trunk Line for electrification.

J.C. and C.P. Ferguson Ltd will replace the existing bridge and track with a double track bridge 15m south of the present site (see diagram) at a cost of $493,000. They won the contract from six other companies

which tendered for the work. The contract is expected to take about a year to complete. Preliminary site work is expected to start soon. When Ihe job is completed the new bridge will support the heavier electric motors and will allow for faster speeds. It should also provide more space underneath the bridge which will allow better access between Ohakune and the Turoa Skifields and Tongariro National Park. Visibility will be improved, the roadway will be wider and a footpath will also be provided. But this won't happen in time for the 1984 ski season ... the existing bridge will not be demolished until the new bridge has been commissioned next year.
