LETTER

It was great to have the opportunity to address all the pupils at Ruapehu College at assembly, and teachers at the Primary School during a staff meeting recently. Both groups showed considerable interest in the matter of Ohakune's very high rate of dental disease which your paper highlighted in an article on 3 April. Most folk were interested to know that it is fewer sweet foods and more flouride which stops holes in teeth, while toothbrushing keeps gum disease away. So, prevention is possible fOr

everyone and it is up to each person, to decide whether they want to keep their teeth for a life-time. I have written to the Service Clubs and health professionals in the area, advising them of the support of the Department of Health in any steps they wish to take, and again I thank your paper for the coverage given to a dental decay rate is a rather sad thing^Pr Ohakune.
