Ohakune's first 111 call to fire
The new Emergency 1 1 1 telephone service seems to be working well ... at least as far as the Ohakune Fire Brigade is concerned said fire chief Max Martin as he attended a rubbish fire in Burns Street last Sunday week. Used for the first time since the Ohakune telephone exchange went automatic last month the emergency 1 1 1 calls are now channelled
through Wanganui. There was some initial doubt about the efficiency of such an extended line of communication without first hand local knowledge ... "but we got good instructions from Wanganui," said Max Martin.
Ohakune's volunteer firemen were however caught unawares on this occasion ... the siren went at precisely the time the daily midday siren is usually sounded and it was a moment or two before everyone realised it was an emergency call.
