Nearly, but not quite

. The Waimarino Bulletin has been keeping this photograph of ^^bbie Erskine (taken nearly months ago in Ohakune) under wraps in the hope that we would be able to announce that she had won the Miss Universe New Zealand title. Unfortunately we can't do that ... but she came very close, ending up in the final 1 8 selected to parade before the TV cameras in Christchurch and then in the final eight from whom Miss Universe New Zealand was chosen. Local readers will recognise Debbie as the girl who came to the Waimarino 14 months ago and worked at the Ohakune Hotel as well as the Cedar Service Station across the road.

Born in Dannevirke 21 years ago she attended school in Palmerston North and has now returned there to follow her main career interests, of modelling, ballet dancing and singing. Debbie was one of 800 girls in New Zealand who originally applied . to enter the Miss Universe New Zealand competition. Only 70 girls were finally selected from the original 800 and invited by TVNZ to attend a personal interview — Debbie was one of them. It was as a result of that interview in Wanganui on 8 February that she was selected as one of the 18 finalists to appear before the TV cameras in Christchurch on Thursday 19 April.
