NEWS IN BRIEF

Shooting An Ohakune man will appear in the Ohakune District Court on Thursday on a charge of careless use of a firearm. Police said the man had allegedly shot at three children, aged between seven and nine, with an air rifle as they returned home from school. They had allegedly been throwing stones onto the roof of a Conway Street house. One boy was hit in the stomach and another in the leg but neither required emergency medical treatment though the pellets did puncture the skin. The third boy was struck on the shoe by one of the pellets. Checkpoint 'Operation Checkpoint' will be in force from now until 29 April, said Traffic Sergeant Aanensen from Wanganui last week. "Naturally we will not be telling people when and where the checkpoints will be but they are likely to pop up anywhere in an attempt to deter the drinking driver," he said.

"Any wise motorist would do well to refrain from drinking and driving over the Easter/Anzac period ... or indeed any other time." National Park School In reference to last week's report about furniture for the school library, parents are to be thanked for their assistance with furniture in Room 4 and also for their continued effort and support in the recent fund-raising ventures. It is hoped the recommendation to the Education Board will be accepted and

thus alleviate the continual financial burden placed on parents. Burglaries Two minor burglaries were committed in the district over the weekend of 7-8 April. The Waimarino Golf Club was broken into on Sunday night with two dozen beer along with cigarettes stolen. In Ohakune, the Cedar Service Station was burgled as 3 a.m. Sunday morning with confectionary items and cartons of cigarettes stolen. The Ohakune Police attended the scene of both incidents.
