WAIOURU COMMUNITY NEWS

"Trees should enhance not detract from the environment" was chairman Russell Martin's opinion concerning trees growing around the camp and residential area. Some trees apparently needed trimming to prevent obstruction to pedestrians. It was agreed that trees should be pruned professionally to prevent stunted growth. Problems have arisen in the past when residents had been given permission to trim the trees on their sections. Pruning of these trees is now not permitted but Russell Martin suggests that Headquarters be notified of the problem. ★ ★ ★ A survey of phone owners was taken by the Post Office recently to guage opinion on free toll dialling to Taihape. The consensus of opinion indicated that residents were not in favour of this, possibly due to the fact that free toll dialling to Taihape would result in an increase of approx $2 per 2-month phone rental as well as a substantial increase in the costs of toll calls to Ohakune. ★ ★ ★ A survey of the shopkeepers on the main Waiouru Road has been completed. As a result of the survey the rubbish collector's contract will be extended to include these shops and an additional levy added to the rates paid by shop owners concerned. ★ ★ ★ Committee members expressed their continued concern about the noxious weeds growing in the paddock on Ruapehu Road (near the end of Weir Tce).

Suggested uses for the paddock when cleared included, horse grazing (to keep weeds down), or grading and grassing so that the field could then be used as a playing field by the local children. Mrs Toohill pointed out that since horses had previously been grazed on this land health regulations required that the land be left unused for some time. ★ ★ ★ A letter from one of the residents of Waiouru to the committee concerning the spraying of the same paddock, requested that the spraying be done on a cairn, clear day. Previous spraying around the Bullot Street vicinity resulted in the loss of many of the resident's complete gardens as well as a large number of trees. ★ ★ ★ The Ruapehu Street bus shelter will shortly be replaced by a new shelter in Thornton Terrace. ★ ★ ★ The residents of a house near the Kenningston Street kindergarten have suggested that the grass verge on the corner of their property be levelled and used as a car park by the kindergarten. It is believed that the kindergarten would be interested in a car park area because of the present danger to children when they cross the road after leaving the kindergarten. ★ ★ ★ A request was made for the WCAC council to advise the Headquarters division of

the vague and confusing labelling of a number of streets such as Ballance Road, Queree Drive, Weir Terrace, Andrews Drive and Carr Crescent. All cause confusion by changing names along the street or appearing to be one street when they are actually not the street shown on the street sign. ★ ★ ★ HQ is also to be contacted about the streets such as Campbell Crescent and Kenningston Street that are labelled 'One Way' but are used by many car drivers as 2-way streets. Russell Martin suggested that much larger signs be erected at the beginning of these streets and that perhaps large signs could also be painted on the roads. ★ ★ * It was suggested that new residents could benefit from being presented with a book outlining the correct pr^Bk cedures to follow whel^P requiring house maintenance etc. The property officer pointed out that in fact new residents were given a copy of this booklet and that most household enquiries were dealt with by the property office anyway. ★ ★ ★ Council members requested that the parking area in front of Aldos restaurant on the main road be 'formalised' with white lines indicating specific areas for car parking. At present parking ,is haphazard and could be dangerous. Kim McCulloch
