Community support groups attend simulated court hearing
Ohakune's elegant and newly-renovated District Courthouse was a silent witness to a different type of court case recently. The occasion was that of a simulated court hearing organised for the Waimarino Community Court Support Groups, and run by Dennis Paxie, Community Education Officer, from Taihape. Lead actors in the courtroom dramas which unfolded before an audience of about 25 people were Constable David Glendinning, youth aid officer for the district, probation officer Tony Ellis and Paul Brown,
barrister and solicitor from Taihape. The 'Judge' for the first part of the session was Mrs Te Uta Murphy-Peehi, a member of the Ohakune Community Court Support Group. Various members of the audience were recruited to act out the roles of those appearing before the court. Despite this light-hearted approach, to the justice system, the audience appreciated the importance and seriousness of the court sessions they will be attending in future to provide a support service to those appearing before the genuine Court officials.
