Road and footpaths to be upgraded
jj^These roadworks in Ohakune's Goldfinch Street are due to be completed this week. This was the scene last Wednesday when the contractors — Byfords of Taihape — moved in to start on the upgrading of Goldfinch Street between Clyde and Ayr Streets. . This section of road in the 'downtown' shopping area of Ohakune has been the subject of criticism and complaint for some time. Uneven footpaths, broken kerbs and poor drainage which causes large puddles to form after rain have all been cited by shoppers, shop-keepers, pedestrains and motorists. The work being undertaken at present includes new kerb and channelling as well as a new roadway and sealing.
Ohakune's town clerk, Colin Turner, said that he had been conscious of the criticism for some time but the job couldn't be done piecemeal ... "the footpaths couldn't be repaired until the kerbing had been repaired and that couldn't be done until the roadway was re-formed and then re-surfaced. And that couldn't be done until we had the finance "
"But the council is in a 'no-win' situation either way," he added ... "its impossible to please everyone." No sooner do we attempt to remedy the situation which had given rise to criticism than we start getting complaints about the expense involved and temporary inconvenience caused ... often from the same people!
