CIVIL DEFENCE

A big Civil Defence Seminar to study methods of evacuation from the central mountains and plateau area in the event of a major eruption was held at the Chateau Tongariro on the 15th of this month ... the Ides of March! Representatives from Lands and Survey, Tongariro National Park staff, Police, Ministry of Works, C.D. organisations in the Wanganui, Waimarino and Tongariro and staff from the Whakapapa and Turoa skifields attended. According to some of those who were there the most useful outcome of this costly exercise was the opportunity provided for everyone concerned with civil defence in the central North Island area to meet with one another and so establish a personal rapport.
