Stage One completed

A $180,000 road contract that has substantially changed the access to Ohakune was compieted last week. It represents Stage 1 in the upgrading of SH49 between Ohakune and Lakes Road corner. For over three months travellers between Ohakune and Raetihi have seen the local landscape being chang^kd as they drive over newly^fformed sections of road between huge bulldozers, graders, rollers and water tankers. Since the Ministry of Works and Byfords of Taihape commenced work

on this massive undertaking in early December, huge quantities of earth have been excavated and re-distributed, tons of road metal have been brought in, roadways have been elevated and realigned, sharp bends have become gentle curves and a former railway embankment has been removed, With the sealing of the new kilometre-long road surface last week, this particular stage comes to an end but, judging from the huge stockpiles of metal which Byfords have deposited in- the area, there is obviously more roadwork to be done ... but not this year.
