DESERT FAIR 1984 ...A SUCCESS STORY
"The day was a great success both socially and financially" said Major Doug Bent, chairman of the Desert Fair committee last week. "We had about 5,000 visitors through the fair during the day and everyone seemed to enjoy the fine weather and many attractions," he said. There were a total of 69 stalls — 32 small ones and 37 large ones — as well as the many sideshows, displays and arena events. These included tug-o-war contests, a roll past of Army Transport vehicles, a
recovery exercise, a display of Nepalese dancing by soldiers of the visiting company of Gurkhas and music by the National Park Country Musib Club. The Army provided rides in their armoured personnel carriers and Wanganui Aero Work's helicopter pilot Lisa Patterson airlifted passengers for a bird's eye view of the Fair throughout the day. "We've collected about $5,000 for the local Lions Clubs so far," said Major Bent, "and we're still counting ... we expect to do about twice as well as last year."
