CRIME STATISTICS ...what do you think?

Taking the lead from the Wanganui Chronicle, — which recently asked its readers' opinions on the country's soaring crime rates and the standard of community behaviour — we invite readers of the Bulletin to write in with constructive opinions and suggestions. There was an overall increase in the NZ crime rate of 4.5% last year with aggravated robbery increasing by 46%, serious burglary (involving amounts of more than $1000) going up by 41%, rape by 11% and serious fraud by 23%. Compared with 383,841 offences in 1982, there were 401,350 offences committed during 1983. Police Commissioner Thompson had said that, while the crime wave alarming, it appeared represent a level of offending that people were prepared to accept. "To me this is totally unacceptable and I am wondering just when New Zealanders are going to stand up and shout 'that is enough'," he said. What do you think? Can anything be done and if so what? Drop a line to: The Editor, Waimarino Bulletin, Box 122, Ohakune with your opinions and suggestions.
