Pipiriki's building 'boom' to go ahead

Approval has been given by the Waimarino County Council for the building of seven new houses at an average cost of $33,000 each. Finance has already been arranged for these houses by the Maori Affairs district building supervisor. The houses are being provided to allow descendants of Pipiriki settlers to return to their land and take up job offers in the area from Winstone's Afforestation. Building approval had been sought by the Pipiriki Incorporation which administers land at Pipiriki on behalf of more than 2000 Maori owners. A delegation representing the Pipiriki Incorporation met with the Waimarino County Council to explain the need for immediate approval in order to avoid the possibility of rising costs if any delays or appeals were encountered. Cr John Martin expressed reservations about the adequacy of water and sewerage facilities in Pipiriki which must. he said, be in line with Health Department standards. Other than that he did not wish to object to the development ... "it's the best

thing to have happened to Pipiriki for years and hopefully the beginning of a return to Pipiriki of it's former glory." Approval for the construction of the seven houses was given subject to the following conditions: • Sewerage effluent to be disposed of to the satisfaction of the Waimarino County Council and the council's health inspector. • Adequate provision of the -disposal of stormwater into natural water courses. • Each section to have an adequate supply of potable (drinkable) water or a storage tank of not less than 23,000 litre capacity. • No further sections to be permitted until a comprehensive planning survey of Pipiriki has been made and appropriate changes made to the district scheme.
