WAIOURU PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS

• School Roll. The School roll stands at 441 pupils, compared with 501 pupils at the end of 1983. • School Staff. The School is operating 16 classrooms, compared with 17 in 1983, and the 1984 staff includes four new teachers. • School Donations. Since the Chairman's letter to parents on 1 February, donations from approximately 20% of parents have been receipted. To qualify for 1983/84 tax rebates, donations need to be made before 31 March. The term donation' was preferred to the term 'school fees' used by many other School Committees/Councils. • Buildings. The Wanganui Education Board have called for tenders for remodelling of the senior school buildings. Works involve upgrading of classrooms, provision of resource and storage rooms, and construction of a corridor linking rooms in the East Wing. The project is expected to cost in excess of $100,000. • Shoplifting. Concern about shoplifting and stealing has been expressed in the latest newsletter from

Waiouru Primary School. With money tending to 'burn a hole' in children's pockets they head for the shopping area where further temptations are presented to them. The stage has been reached where shopkeepers warn that, however reluctantly, the police will have to be called in if shoplifting is detected. The following advice has been given to parents: • Do not send children to school with 'spending' or 'pocket-money'. Lunches should be provided by parents or purchased with the correct moneybefore arriving at school. • Children should not visit the shopping area unless ordering or collecting lunches or if a note from a parent is received for a special shopping request. • Children should return home after school and not go to the shopping centre on their way home. • A further request is made to parents to ensure their children are provided with or are encouraged to purchase good wholesome lunches rather than the expensive 'junk-foods'.
