The School year has begun well for Ruapehu College. January 31 saw the return of Third, Sixth and Seventh Forms with the Fourth and Fifth Formers beginning on 1 Feb. The school role now totals just over 400 pupils with a large intake of Third Formers Third Form camps began on 13 February with 3HU being the first to participate. Each group stays in the Waipakahi River Valley of the Kaimanawa Forest Park for five day s and take part in an Outdo'or Education Programme. This consists of tramps, mountain safety talks, camp cooking and an overnight camp where the pupils must build their own bivouacs under which they sleep. These activities are carried out under the supervision of Mr R. Rowles and Mr G. Brebner, both Mountain Safety Instructors, and cJHb staff members. At~ telmnce at the camps is as follows: 3HU attended 1317 February, 3RB attended from 20-24 February, 3CI attended from 27 February2 March and 3HW attends from 5-9 March. Exams Towards the end of 1983 many pupils participated in Pitmans and TCB Typing examinations and there

Swimming On 15 February, Ruapehu College travelled to Burn's Pool, Waiouru for the annual school swimming sports. All the day's events were completed with several of the standing records being broken. Championship results Junior Girls: lst K. Dobson, 2nd A. Trotter, 3rd V. Pearce. Senior Girls: lst L. Podjursky, 2nd J. Dodd, 3rd L. Davies/T. Berry. Senior Boys: 3 st D. Dempsey, 2nd C. Eades, 3rd W. Trail. House Captains and Vice Captains for 1984 have now beenelected. Dyke (V/Capt). Round-the-Bays Three Ruapehu College students and a teacher are travelling to Auckland this week to compete in the Auckland Star's 'Round-the-Bays' run on Saturday. The- teacher is Alan Graham, the boys are Neil Fredericksen (15), Brendon Cole (14) both of Raetihi and Glen Prattley (14) of Waiouru.
