'Ash' Wednesday
A 900 hectare 'burn off' of dessicated scrub on one of Winstone Afforestation blocks north of the RaetihiPipiriki Road last Wednesday cast a huge pall of smoke over much of the Waimarino. By mid-afternoon the sun had become no more than an orange disc in a smokefilled sky while ash descended like gentle snow and covered cars, roofs, washing, plants and footpaths in Ohakune and Raetihi. In Waiouru one observer said that by late afternoon
the smoke had made the sun 'very pretty' but it had also limited the visibility and tended to make air-borne helicopters 'disappear'faster than usual. National Park experienced both the haze and the ash. Many residents of the Waimarino questioned the right of Winstone's Afforestation to modify the 'local climate' to such an extent and so affect the properties and outdoor pursuits of so many people over such a wide area.
