Earthquake felt

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale was felt over a large area of the Waimarino last Tuesday evening. The 10-20 second tremor was felt at 9.24 in Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru as a gently rocking motion with no accompanving noise.

Main trunk line trains~ were delayed for up to two hours while the track was checked. According to the DSIR Seismological Observatory in Wellington the earthquake was a 'shallow' one (not more than 15kms deep) centred near Lake Taupo.
