STREETLIGHTS DAMAGED

At last month's Raetihi Borough Council meeting Mayor Workman said that he had received a complaint from one ratepayer recently about the lack of street lighting outside her home. The mayor said that he knew this was a problem because the smashing of streetlights seemed to be a fairly prevalent occurrence in some parts of the town. Mayor Workman asked that councillors and ratepayers report any lightsmashing incidents so that action could be taken against those responsible. "The penalties are §evere for those caught," he said. He also pointed out that it is the ratepayer who ultimately pays for repairs and replacement of street lighting through their local body rates. Mayor Workman said that local schools would be approached to seek the cooperation of the children.
