PONY CLUB NEWS
Ohakune Girl Gains 'B' Certificate Heather Cooper of the Ohakune branch of the Waimarino Pony Club gained her 'B' certificate on Saturday 22 January. She is the first in the area since Julie Pearson (nee Bowater) gained hers 14 years ago. There have been riding courses for all levels held in recent weeks. The first was before Christmas and was for senior local riders. The last was for all members, adults and children alike and ran from 16 to 19 January. Both of these courses were conducted by Mrs Julie Pearson, and a marked improvement was seen in the riders who attended. Two further courses were . held at Kaitieke, and chief instructor Mrs Evelyn Cooper, travelled to both of these. One was held by Beth Fife, of Litchfield, and the other by Miss Bridgett Flynn, from
Canada, on a working holiday in New Zealand. Bridgett is a former Canadian National Junior Champion. She impressed everyone by her knowledge, riding skill and the presentation of her subjects. Heather Cooper took part in this course two days prior to sitting her 'B' Certificate examination. The last holiday event was a 4-day trek. Nine members rode, and stayed in shearers' quarters overnight. The club wishes to thank the property owners for allowing members to ride and stay on their properties. Thanks too to Mrs F. Tebay who transported gear by road. February events: A carnp was held over Waitangi weekend, which was attended by about 20 members and their families. The Raetihi Show (18 February), the Karioi Sports (25 February), and the Waimarino Dressage Day (26 February) are all coming up soon.
