'A warm welcome'

The Oasis Hotel in Waiouru is under new management. Ron and Betty Biss took over from Gary Cole who has gone to the THC at Wairakei. Mr & Mrs Biss (pictured) were appointed by Phil and Cynthia Casey of Wanganui, leasees of the Oasis Hotel, as managers just before Christmas. Prior to arriving in Waiouru they had been managing a 38-room licensed hotel — the Palm Lodge — in West New Britain Island which is in Papua-New Guinea, for 18 months. There they had to cope with very 'trying' temperatures of 42° -45° as well as language and cultural barriers, but though the work was hard and conditions primitive they had no regrets. That hotel, the Palm Lodge, was located in the palm oil area of West New Britain and provided accommodation for many prominent guests associated with that industry;

Ron and Betty Biss had previously owned the Patututahi hotel in Gisborne for seven years. When they sold up in 1981 they.moved to Ohope to build their own home. They stayed only 18 months before 'answering the cair and going overseas to manage the Palm Lodge. At the Oasis Hotel Ron and Betty Biss plan to provide a warm country style welcome and hospitality for all their patrons. Their ambition is to provide diners at Casey's Joint with valu^j and quality while stSP retaining a family style atmosphere.
