Prices fluctuate at Raetihi ewe sales
Raetihi's 2-tooth ewe sale on 26 January saw a yarding of some 18,000 sheep meet good demand. Prices were strong and generally well up on last years similar 2-tooth sale. N. Fredericksen topped the sale with a line of 400 Border Leicester cross ewes that made $35. A. Graham sold 197 at $29.50. A line of 366 Perendales from W.R. & L.P. Eaton made $27.40 while 246 from D.S. Bennett made $26. Okeore Land Co sold 98 Romneys at $26.00. Medium sheep were making $f8-$23. Last Thursday's aged ewe sale at Raetihi wasn't so good. Much larger than usual yardings throughout the
lower half of the North Island meant that prices of aged ewes weren't as good as expected in some of the medium lines. Exceptions were Ohorea Station with 1 187 A.M. 5 yr ewes making $20 and R.H. Koorey topping the sale at $20.50 for 200 A.M. 5 year ewes.
There was a yarding of 21,000 sheep compared to about 15,000 last year. As usual, top Waimarino sheep made good prices but some punters weren't too happy with the tail enders. Some pens made only $4 or so with one line of 21 making $3.10. The sale average was almost $11.
