i last month's meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council consideration was given to a proposal to relocate, reestablish and re-furbish the public library presently housed in a room adjoining the new joint council Administration Centre — formerly the Raetihi Council Chambers. According to Cr Compton the existing library space was already far too small by national library standards even for the present population, and with the projected increase in population figures, would soon be totally inadequate. On a square-foot-per-head-of-population basis it had become increasingly obvious that an alternative and larger site had to be found to house the library collection. One of the sites being considered was the Oliver Building in Seddon Street ■which, until late last year, was occupied by Ruapehu Linen Services. An alternative under ' consideration was another building in Seddon Street the identity of which.
because of the delicate negotiations currently under discussion, could not yet be disclosed. The vacating of the existing library rooms in the former borough council chambers would also allow the new combined administration staff to operate more efficiently.
