Creative holiday activity

A school holiday activity that has proved very popular among the young were the weekly ceramic classes run especially for local children by the Honeypot Studios in Raetihi. As many as 30 children from Raetihi and Ohakune have attended the 2-hour morning classes over the three weeks the course has been running since the start •the New Year. The ages of the children, boys and girls, who enrolled for the classes ranged mainly between 5 and 1 2 but there were some pre-schoolers (the youngest being 2'/$!) and one college student. It took most children two or three sessions to complete the preparation and painting

of each piece while others were able to finish two pieces within a week. The finished products — birds, animals, fish etc — were taken away to be shown to proud parents and become decorative ornaments around the family home. The fee of $5 per week paid by each child was to cover the cost of the original greenware, the firing and the paint ... there were no class fees as such, said Honey Winter. It gave the children something creative and worthwhile to do over the school holidays, she said, and was so successful that the same classes will be offered every school holiday.
