Heading south

Pipiriki's senior ranger John Ombler, left last week with his wife Kathy and 3month old daughter Jenny to take up a new appointment with the Fiordland National Park. They will be based at Te Anau. John and Kajhy, who have had a 5-year association with the Wanganui River while based at Pipiriki, were reluctant to leave but the new posting meant promotion for John. During their years in Pipiriki they have explored the Wanganui River area extensively both on foot and in various waterborne craft ... canoes, kayaks and jetboat. They've even written a guide book and contributed articles about their travels

and the history of the river. The book is called "The Wanganui River ... a Scenic, Historic and Wilderness Experience," first published by the Wanganui River Reserves Board in 1981. The book is available from all ranger stations in the area.
