MOTEL FIRE
A fire which started in the boiler-room of Ohakune's Mountain View Motel on Tuesday 20 December caused extensive damage in the immediate area of the fire. The motel's boiler-room was gutted in the fierce blaze which was fuelled by spilled diesel when the boiler was lit. The adjoining laundry room Sustained some damage. "It took us about four minutes to get there," said Ohakune's fire chief Max
Martin, "but the place was already well ablaze by then and the ignited diesel fuel was spreading over the floor beyond the boiler room." Dense smoke meant that some members of the brigade had to wear breathing apparatus to get to the seat of the fire. "It was one of the hott^H^ fires we've attended" saicl Max Martin. Even pipes carrying cold water were ■ melting and bending and part of an aluminium step ladder was a mass of molten metal.
